A LETTER FROM DAVID KING
03 December 2012
To
Whom It May Concern,Those of us who are involved in organic urban
agriculture are intimately familiar with the difficulty in obtaining
organic seedlings for our gardens; the chain stores don't carry organic
seedlings and there are few alternative choices. I am very grateful for
local small nurseries like Two Dog Nursery that are there for all of
us wanting to have organic gardens.
For
our area, that nursery is Two Dog Nursery. There is simply no other
place to find organic seedlings in our part of Los Angeles; they fill a
very important niche and are a local leader in organic urban gardening.
More and more, American cities will need urban agriculture to feed
their populations. We need these nurseries and we count on Two Dog to
show the way.
I
know in the coming years, the dedication, the willingness and the
sacrifice to create and sustain this vital service will be appreciated
by many For now, Joanne and Alex and their two dogs, deserve much more
acknowledgment for holding their place in the structure of organic
gardening in Los Angeles. They are a vital link in this growing
movement.
I
heartily recommend Two Dog Nursery for consideration in your program:
not only are they a significant contributor to the blossoming organic
gardening community in Los Angeles, but their local presence is felt in
the classes they teach, the food drives they conduct and their
conscious decisions to act locally in every way they can. Their work is
significant and very much needed.
I can be contacted by letter, email or phone to answer questions or expand on my opinions further.
Sincerely,
David King

A LETTER FROM GERRI MILLER This is in support of the application for the 2013 Growing Green Awards for Two Dog Organic Nursery:
As
the only independently owned certified organic nursery in the LA area
as far as I am aware, Two Dog serves a desperate need in this community.
My company, HGEL, is an edible landscaping company that serves
clientele that are looking to learn to grow green and eat healthy. Until
I learned about Two Dog, organically grown transplants were not
available to my clients. Two Dog also offers classes to their community
to learn to grow edibles using the simple EarthBox system which allows
folks with limited space and experience to be successful in raising
their own food, another mission of Two Dog's. At Two Dog I am able to
find seedlings of rare and unique varieties not available commercially
(organic or not) which allows me to continuously introduce new veggies
to my clients in order to further pique their interest in trying
something new in their gardens! As a small local family-owned nursery,
Two Dog is, unfortunately, a rarity in this day and age of Big Box and
chain nurseries. In response to their exceptional service and unique
product, the community has been incredibly supportive of Two Dog. They
are definitely a prized part of their community and home gardens. We
would all love to see their efforts rewarded with this grant which would
help them continue their work to make growing organically at home an
integral part of everyone's life!

A LETTER FROM MYRNA ROBIN GINTEL
To whom it may concern,
I
have had the good fortune to have Alex and Joanne participate by
donating to the Frances Blend School, a LAUSD school for Blind and
Handicapped children. Joanne has both come to the school and planted
with the children as well as donated seedlings to the garden. Please see
photos at www.francesblendschool.com.
The
children's lives have changed with the addition of the garden and
experiencing new fruit such as blueberries and trumpet squash. We have
been teaching them nutrition as well as a love for the land and "seeing"
, feeling, tasting, growing, harvesting, in a complete school garden
program. Two Dog Nursery has been essential to that process and
introduced us to new fruits and veggies.
Joanne and Alex work out
of their home where every nook and cranny is devoted to planting and
growing for their customers. A grant would enable them to green the
nursery by bringing in rain barrels and going solar and installing a
water filtration system. Right now the seedlings are watered by city
chlorinated water. They take great effort to be completely organic using
organic seeds, worm castings, organic soil and being able to use
"green" water and switch from florescent to Led would be a major
accomplishment for them. But, they are a small nursery... and only a
grant would enable this to happen as they do not have funds to make this
happen without help. Please consider them seriously for this honor and
grant.
In
addition, I have enjoyed the benefit of donations from Two Dog Nursery
as a Master Gardener in the Los Angeles Master Gardener Program. All
the Master gardeners enjoy the benefit of organic seedlings donated by
Two Dog Nursery for the many schools and community gardens they
service. This is very much appreciated and shows what generous good
people JoAnne and Alex are.
Thank you,
Myrna Robin Gintel -- Master Gardener

A LETTER FROM HILARY
To whom it may concern:
I
own and operate an organic landscape business meaning, we use all
organic materials and use only electric or battery powered tools. Many
of our clients request the installation of a vegetable garden, some a
single raised bed or Earth Box, others, like the school for which we
provide weekly maintenance service, have enormous beds which feed the
school lunch program.
We buy our organic seedings exclusively
from Two Dog as their quality is simply unequaled. There are several
large, chain nurseries in Los Angeles which do offer some organic
products, however, I will not consider purchasing anywhere but Two Dog
as my customers have come to expect and rely on Two Dog's product and so
have I. It's just a bonus that visiting the nursery means spending
time and chatting with Jo Ann and Alex and of course, the dogs!
Best regards,
Hilary

also appreciate their food drives.

A LETTER FROM BEVERLY SCHWARTZ
Hi,
My
name is Beverly Schwartz and I recently started growing blueberries. I
was unaware at first where or how to begin to grow my own set of
blueberries. It was through constant trial but more error that I would
fail. It was not until, one day that this website was referred to me by
Julie Goler after seeing what a beautiful garden Beverly Hills High
School has. I particularly liked how Beverly Hills High School grew
their own organic beds. It was through Joanne and Alex Trigo's
instruction that taught me the correct planters to fill certain soil
amendments so the blueberries would grow correctly. Joanne and Alex have
helped me with many things in regards to my new blueberry organic
garden and I would just like to say an extra special thank you to them
for all the advice and guidelines.
Thank you so much Joanne and Alex Trigo!
Sincerely, Beverly Schwartz

A LETTER FROM JOCELYN CORBETT
To Whom it May Concern:
I
have been a client of Two Dog Nursery for 2 1/2 years now. Before I
learned of them, I had had one disastrous experience trying to grow
tomatoes. I then read about Two Dog in the Los Angeles Times, and have
subsequently grown two years of summer produce successfully, and am now
in my first round of fall/winter produce.
I had for many years
wanted to try growing some of the foods I feed my family, and when I
finally made the decision to grow my own produce, and to do so
organically, it was largely due to the support and guidance of JoAnne
and Alex that I felt confident to do so. I was scared and didn't know
anything about anything! But they are so committed to supporting their
clients in growing successful crops; many is the time I have emailed
them with some crisis, and they have never failed to provide timely and
helpful guidance. I am sure I would have lost my entire lettuce crop
earlier this year without their advice. They have given me the courage
to branch out and plant seedlings I never would have had the nerve to
try to grow before. My family and I are quite simply delighted to eat
our own vegetables; not only do they taste significantly better than
what can be found at grocery stores, but it's such a source of pride
that we grew them ourselves!
Although I imagine I could get some
limited organic seedlings elsewhere, I have consciously chosen to
continue to go to Two Dog Nursery, both for their excellent client
service and for their commitment to educate and assist the community at
large that may not have the resources to get into organic gardening (or
gardening at all) on their own. Moreover, I'm not at all certain that
anyplace else would be able to offer me the wide variety of produce (as
well as soils and related materials and items) that Two Dog regularly
offers.
I have not been directly involved in Two Dog's
contributions to the community, although I have donated to their food
drives (which are a terrific idea in and of themselves), but I so admire
this aspect of the nursery. I firmly believe that some of the local
lesser fortunate neighborhoods are demonstrably better off for Two Dog's
efforts in this regard.
I unequivocally recommend Two Dog for
the "Growing Green" award in the Growers category). I strongly encourage
you to recognize their excellent work in the local community and
support their continued success.
Very truly yours,
Jocelyn Corbett Dapeer, Rosenblit Litvak, LLP Los Angeles, CA

A LETTER FROM NORMAN & ROBERTA GOLDBERG
After learning about Two Dog Nursery as the
featured "speaker" at the 2011 Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical
Society's Annual Garden Tour (a very posh affair touring gorgeous
homes and gardens in a very elite area of Los Angeles, including having
the evening buffet at the home of the Mayor of Los Angeles), we were
thrilled to learn of a place we could buy organic vegetable transplants
for our 10 EarthBoxes garden. As our back yard is mostly a concrete
slab, growing in EarthBoxes, whiskey barrels, etc. is the only way we
can have a variety of 100% organically grown vegetables. Our community
is considered "predominantly Hispanic"; and, there is almost no organic
produce available despite having over 10 grocery chains in the area!
So finding a place to get organic transplants was
great, but when we found that their twice a year Plant Sales asked for a
donation of non-perishables to the Los Angeles Food Bank as your
"admission", plus a 10% discount on the price of the transplants, we
were very much impressed and viewed it worth the 20+ mile one-way trip
to the nursery even though we are Senior Citizens and on a fixed
income.
In addition, Two Dog is very
generous in their transplants, having 2 if not 3 baby plants in each
pot. Two Dog wants to make sure you get what you've paid for. The
variety of plants they grow on a small residential piece of property is
outstanding. And their online database gives us the information we
need to try out our "green thumbs".
Finally, Two
Dog just doesn't have transplants. They also have the potting soil,
amendments, etc.--everything needed to make your garden a success.
Two Dog Nursery definitely deserves to win the NRDC's Annual GROWING GREEN Competition.
Sincerely,
Norman and Roberta Goldberg

A LETTER FROM SARA MOE
To Whom It May Concern,
I
wanted to extend my sincerest recommendation for Two Dog Nursery in
Los Angeles for the NRDC's annual Growing Green competition. Alex and Jo
Anne are incredibly passionate about what they do, and that passion is
contagious in the best possible way. Not only did they help us chose
the right seedlings for our garden, they were with us through the
entire growing process to field questions and concerns, even lending us
some organic pest deterrent when our broccoli started disappearing
overnight! My children loved nothing more than visiting the Nursery,
where Alex would take them to visit the worms and Jo Anne would allow
them to help water (and occasionally snag a ripe blueberry or
strawberry, too!) Easily caught up in the energy and excitement around
growing, I found myself with not only avid helpers in the garden, but
avid eaters of fresh grown, organic vegetables!
Alex
and Jo Anne not only take wonderful care of their clients, but are
also deeply committed to giving back to the community. Their food drives
have become quite the neighborhood event, attracting large donations
along with their devoted clientele.
Please
consider Two Dog Nursery for the "Growers" prize. They built their
business from the ground up with a huge amount of integrity and regard
for the environment, and I can't wait to see what they will be capable
given some additional resources.
Sincerely,
Sara Moe

A LETTER FROM DEBORAH LEITH
December 03, 2012
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing in support of Two Dog Organic Nursery, a local
business that we are proud to work in partnership with and that has
and, continues to support, our not-for-profit organic, educational
garden program - helping to educate young minds, improve health and
inspire healthy choices for life, year-on-year, for 630 transitional
kindergarten through 5th grade students.
We are indebted to Two Dog Nursery for their always eagerly
shared knowledge and expertise and, their provision of the very best
organic supplies and plants at reduced cost to our Parent/Teacher
organization which is run by volunteers and funded completely by
donations. Without Two Dog's support we could not be confident in the
quality and organic certification of the materials we use or be
confident in the passing on of such knowledge and expertise to our
students.
Programs like ours rely so heavily on the support and
partnership of businesses in the community. Two Dog Nursery has always
been such a great friend to us and we would especially like to help
them to achieve more of their goals, just like they have helped us with
ours. They are so deserving of winning this competition to help them
to make their business more efficient, economical and eco-friendly,
especially as they so willingly give of themselves to others and,
because they have such a genuine commitment to conservation,
environmental stewardship and a healthier, greener future for all.
We highly commend their application to you as, so many
people, organizations and the environment, will continue to benefit
from the success of their business and, that is why it is so important
that they are given the opportunity and, a helping hand to take it to
the next level.
Sincerely,

A LETTER FROM THE LA REGIONAL FOOD BANK
December 3, 2012
To Who It May Concern
I have had the pleasure of working with Alex and JoAnne
Trigo, Two Dog Nursery for nearly 10 years. In 2003, the Trigos reached
out to the Food Bank, as they were interested in hosting a Food Drive.
Since then, Alex and JoAnne have been staunch supporters of the Food
Bank in various ways.
In addition to the food drives they host throughout the year,
many Two Dog Nursery supporters are now Food Bank partners because of
the numerous mentions in their newsletter. We truly appreciate the fact
that Alex and JoAnne are true ambassadors for the Food Bank.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has been in existence
since 1973. Next year, we will celebrate our 40th Anniversary of
providing support to those in need throughout Los Angeles County.
Throughout the year, we will have a number of different ways to
recognize our various partners. I will reach out to you within the next
few weeks regarding your history with the Food Bank, as well as
anecdotes, and other interesting facts and/or photos you may have.
Sincerely,

A LETTER FROM MELANIE GRIFFITH
Hi!
I love 2 Dog Nursery! By chance one day, at a Yoga class, I
met Joanne and Alex. We started talking afterword and they told me
about their nursery. I went over to their home to check it out! I was
so very impressed! I love what they do, how they do it and am very
grateful for their example of how to do a nursery business in our
times. I am a huge fan, and follower of all they do!!! With great

A LETTER FROM CORRINE McKEAN
Dear Two Dog Nursery,
I
always wanted to start an herb garden but I never had enough
information and was not sure how to get organic soil. Then I went to
the Westlake farmers market and found you. Not only was I able to get
all the herbs I needed, organic soil, but I had also met 2 friendly
people who had a ton of very useful advice for me! And for when I have
questions at home, your website is quite useful with very detailed
information. I also enjoy reading your newsletter. I am now looking
forward to be able to get my own French shallots like the ones I had
growing up in France. It is simply wonderful to go pick up fresh herbs
outside when I am cooking. I will be buying more herbs once I get more
containers.
Thank you!

A LETTER FROM BRET MACKAY
To whom it may concern,
My family has benefited from Two Dog Nursery's commitment to
helping the LaCanada community become more health conscious and better
garners. Three years ago our family first started our backyard
garden. Since then, we have grown bushels of tomatoes, artichokes,
kale, hot peppers, carrots, lettuce, herbs and potatoes. My son has
become a great advocate of organic food. Together we made three
separate types of pepper hot sauce. Our family's favorite dinner is
fresh from our garden, tomato and basil pasta. We especially love how
the various colors of the tomatoes - orange, red, green, pink and white
- combine with the smell of fresh basil to create a full sensory
dinner. Two Dog Nursery was the source of advice, help and seedlings to
help us become backyard gardeners. I think the love of gardening will
stay with my children long after they move away and have their own
families.
Sincerely,
Bret Mackay

A LETTER FROM RUTH & JERRY JONES

beautiful, healthy seedlings which thrive. In addition to providing all of the above, they have become friends!

A LETTER FROM KATRINA POWELL
To Whom it May Concern,
I have been dabbling at gardening for a few years, but Two
Dog Nursery has helped me expand my gardening hobby to provide more
healthy fresh food from my garden for my family. Their online
information on garlic allowed me to grow garlic for the first time last
winter. I didn't plant many bulbs, since I wasn't sure I would succeed,
but the garlic I grew was amazingly tasty. I was very sad that I hadn't
grown more. Needless to say, I have expanded the amount of space
devoted to garlic this year.
Living in Tujunga has made it very hard to grow plants in the
ground, so I appreciate their knowledge on how to grow so many plants
in containers. They are always willing to take the time to explain the
care needed for any of their plants, and even took time to carefully
explain the care of some plants during a busy farmer's market day, to my
daughter who was working on a girl scout badge about growing food.

A LETTER FROM EDIE
Dear Jo Anne & Alex,
Want to thank you both so much for all you've taught me
this last couple of years! Being a vegetarian, and wanting everything
to be organic, I feel the best way to get what I really want is to
grow it myself! And I have. I have an Earth Box, and gave one to
my grandson who is learning how to grow the things he loves. Also, the
potato sacks are the greatest. I can grow my favorite red potatoes so
easily now. I have one of your raspberry bushes and am slowly adding
other berries and fruit trees to my back yard garden. Thank you for
always being there and for your wonderful teachings. We need more
people like you two to show families how to "go green!"
Regards & thanks,
Edie

A LETTER FROM TAWNEY & ARTHUR ANDERSON
To whom it may concern:

growing SO much more since meeting Jo Anne and Alex! We have their
earth box and potato sacks as well! They have guided and encouraged us
to grow more and have fun while we do it!
Thanks Two Dog for all the support!

A LETTER FROM ANN COMMERFORD
My
dear, old friend, JoAnne Trigo started me gardening with my first
Earthbox and my first attempt to garden, growing tomatoes. She
generously researched the best type of tomatoes to grow on the coast in
North San Diego, CA. for me. I so much appreciate her expertise and
genuine interest to teach and share her vast knowledge about gardening
with me. She is so very enthusiastic and has such a wonderful attitude
of "serving" her customers and helping them develop a love of
gardening which enriches the soul as well as the body. Two Dog Nursery
is an inspiration and example of how "spirit and nature" can work
together to advance the future of many in this world of many
challenges. I must mention also that more work is behind the high
quality of plants and promotion of this noble work and that her
husband, Alex and other dedicated helpers, Sydney, Juan, and all other
quality staff, also work tirelessly to benefit their these lofty
goals. Thanks you, my dear friends for sharing with me all your
efforts. Annie C0.

A LETTER FROM DR. & MRS. CHARLES METZGER
To Whom It May Concern:
Jo
Anne and Alex are simply the very best. We have increased our
knowledge of planting our healthy garden ten-fold due to their sharing
their knowledge with us over the last many months. We, in turn, have
encouraged countless friends to grow their edible gardens as well which
results in an awareness of eating more healthy, getting outdoors, and
sharing with one another.
We always have on hand a supply of all
the herbs we use for cooking at our home with the net result being
better tasting vegetarian dishes, etc.
We have attended their classes and met them at the farmer's market, and it has just been a win-win for all of us.
Best
wishes for continued success to these wonderful people and their staff
of workers for a great holiday season and new year that will see all
their dreams fulfilled.

A LETTER FROM DON & MAGGIE SEITZ
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a letter of recommendation for the Two Dog Nursery
for the NRDC's annual Growing Green competition. We were so happy to
find Jo Anne and Alex at our local Farmers Market and learn about their
wonderful growing systems. We are experienced gardeners and have had a
home garden since 1970. But when we found the Two Dog Nursery, our
garden became not only more productive, but a lot more fun. We have
send a lot of folks over to their nursery at the Farmers Market and
these families are now very excited about growing their own veggies and
fruit. It is so rewarding to see kids excited about growing and
EATING fresh produce. Jo Anne and Alex are at the Farmers Market every
week and take time to help us with our questions and concerns. Their
organic seedlings are healthy and produce wonderful veggies. Their
garden at home is amazing and shows how much they care about the
environment and the plants that they grow for us.
We highly recommend the Two Dog Nursery for the Growers category in your contest!!
Sincerely,
Don and Maggie Seitz

I so love the fact that each Saturday I can see Jo Anne and Alex from Two Dog.

Nursery at the La Canada Farmer's Market. Bit by bit I have
transformed my front yard into a garden that produces food. They have
been instrumental in providing me plants started organically and
tracking down various fruit trees that will provide me with home grown
fruit for years.Berries do the best in my yard: blueberries,
blackberries strawberries and raspberries. I can't wait until my kiwi

A LETTER FROM MARISOL
hola jo ann alex ~
Hope this rain is doing wonders to your garden - it is to mine!
I just wanted to take a minute and say "thank you" for all you've done. I've
always been a Gardener, but finding "organic" plants is not an easy
task - not to mention all the hard-to find plants. your "growing
guides" make it all that much easier having you in my community farmer's
market has been nothing less then perfect. I've come to feel you're
part of our community and thru your knowledge you've not only furthered
my understanding and love of sustainable gardening. this has also
transferred on to my daughter, who very Sunday, comes to
the market with me. she has seen first hand the evolution of a plant
to soil to food - a true gift in this day and age. i strongly believe
this is why she became involved in her eco club at school. when she
grows up, she'll have a garden of her own - no doubt.
keep up the good work and gracias!
saludos,
marisol
